3 Morning Habits That Ensure A Great Day

The morning is the easiest time for me to stick to my habits because there is little interruption. Cody’s still asleep and I can get a lot done. Whether it’s the weekend or before school, these 3 things are non-negotiables for me.

I used to try to do a lot in the mornings but I’ve scaled it back a lot because I truly love sitting on my couch and starting slow. I noticed when I made this shift how clear my head was going into the day.

NON-NEGOTIABLE #1 : READ NONFICTION

As my coffee finishes brewing, I drink a large glass of water. I let Nova outside & then I take my warm mug and walk slowly to the couch where my Kindle is waiting for me. I used to be a paper books only girl, then I was spending a ridiculous amount of money on books which isn’t bad, but I am trying to cut out unnecessary spending. So I allow myself to buy one paper book a month instead.

I am an avid reader, and have been my whole life. I love getting lost in a book and it is by far my favorite way to wake myself up. I try to spend 30-45 minutes each morning reading. I go through 5-10 books per month easily & it is because of this routine. I don’t have to think hard about these books because they’re simply for fun! I slowly let my brain & body awake as I sip on my freshly brewed coffee.

You can follow me on Goodreads if you look up Lauren Jette – I am constantly posting my reviews & adding books to my wishlist that is never ending.

NON-NEGOTIABLE #2 : BIBLE & JOURNAL

When I was going to the gym in the morning, I rarely made it a habit to find time to read my bible & journal. This was something I went into 2023 really wanting to get back. I used to be so good at spending time in the word & praying but for the last year or 2, I noticed how often I’d skip it saying I’d find time later in the day. And as you all know, our days get busy quickly and before you know it, it’s time for bed & I still hadn’t done it.

I read until my coffee is drank and then I open up my journal and bible that’s on my side table of our couch. I have read different devotionals throughout the years but I found the You Version Bible App at the end of 2022 and have been using it each morning.

One thing I love about the app is the guided prayer section & videos to go along with daily scripture.

I have a section at the back of my journal where I keep track of what chapters I’ve read in the bible. The app focuses on 1-2 lines in a chapter but if I haven’t read the whole chapter, I go to the bible and read it all, highlight, and make notes. Then I listen to the short video & write down anything else that comes up.

After going through the daily scripture & guided prayer, I spend time writing out my thoughts in my journal. There’s a lot that comes up some days and others I feel as though my brain is empty & I can’t think of a single thought.

This habit alone is one I have found to be a necessity if I’m going to have a good day. I am proud to say I have not missed one day since the start of 2023. My relationship with God is stronger, my mindset, mood, and the blessings I’ve had since are a direct correlation.

Whether you believe in God or not, spending time journaling & meditating or praying in the morning can drastically help in starting your day.

NON-NEGOTIABLE #3 : POSITIVE PODCAST

When I’m getting ready each morning I have been binging the podcast, Dear Gabby. It is by Gabby Bernstein & when I say it changes my mood. It changes my mood. No matter what I’m going through her podcasts seem to speak to me.

If you’re not a podcast junkie like I am, put on some music, an audiobook, or a Youtube video and get your mindset in the right spot for the day! There is a study or saying that the 5 people you are closest to are who you will start to act/think like. I feel the same way with what you listen to.

I am a better teacher and wife when I absorb my brain with positive messages in the morning. Through the books I read, my bible, and this podcast or ones like it. I find I have more patience & joy throughout the day.

I used to not pay attention to these things but over the last couple years of my life being all over the place, loving my job to hating it to loving it again. Starting my own business to questioning what I want that business to look like. Living at home, to marrying Cody & moving in together with a dog. There’s a lot of changes & all of the small and big things all impact my day to day life.

I love my mornings and I think you should too! These 3 things could take you 15 minutes or they could take you 2 hours. Adapt it to fit your schedule but I truly think having a piece of each of these built into the first part of your day impacts it tremendously.
