Don’t Wait for Retirement

I was recording my Embrace the Sweat Podcast last week and I said this phrase off script and it really just hit me. “Don’t wait for retirement.”

We are conditioned our whole life that we work hard and when you retire you get to use the money you worked for to do all your traveling and fun things you couldn’t do when you had no money or you were raising children.

Screw that.

I got nostalgic listening to music on my drive to the gym just yesterday after brewing this phrase in my head for a week and a couple things came to mind.

  1. I used to never be home. In high school I literally was rarely ever home because I was involved in 20 different clubs or had soccer and was constantly hanging out with friends. I got to college and loved going out and meeting people and hanging out (once all my homework was done of course. I was a nerd first before anything else).
  2. At some point between my sophomore year of college and starting my own teaching jobs and coaching, I lost this side of me.
  3. I now love to sit at home constantly. The idea of going out, even with close friends, makes me cringe thinking about it. It’s always great once I’m out, but it’s hard in the moment to actually leave my house.
  4. I have lost my sense of fun. Like why does 24 seem so old?! I’m acting like I’m 50 years old. Not even because my parents have more of a social life than I do.

I have become someone who works constantly and when I’m not working, I’m thinking about work. I stopped living for my life and started working for my future life down the road.

It is so sad.

I notice it with my relationship with Cody and my friends, that I started taking things so seriously and simply lost who I was.

I don’t know if you can relate to this at all or if it’s just me being me but I am vowing right now that I am going to stop waiting for retirement to have fun. I am going to laugh more. Smile more. Love harder. And share all parts of my life that I love online and not have to fit this mold of the ‘perfect girl’ I have always strived for.

I want to stay as young as I can for as long as I can and take you guys alongside me. So if you don’t already follow me on Instagram and Tiktok, please do – it’s laurentaylorslifestyle on both of them and tag me in fun and happy things you do all week long! 😉
