Dry needling is the process of using a tiny needle to stimulate the muscle to help it relax. When they insert the needle into the muscle they use a little probe gun that taps the end of the needle. As it sits on your muscle the muscle will begin to relax and help to improve flexibility, pain, or help heal injuries.
The needle itself is SO small! It just feels like a little prick going into the skin & then they have to move it around to find the muscle. I was very fortunate that the PT I had doing this got the needle in place extremely quickly so it didn’t feel like anything. Once the needle is in the muscle and the probe sits on the end it feels like a rush of pressure when the vibration starts to match. It’s super quick but you can feel when it’s working. After that, the muscle feels like it’s throbbing for about 30-60 seconds until the muscle is stimulated as much as needed. Then it’s done!
The procedure itself takes maybe 2-4 minutes on each side. I had both my shoulders/traps done and it took less than 10 minutes for it all. The throbbing like I mentioned above only lasts 30-60 seconds each. I don’t know if that’s typical or that’s just how my muscles were but it was over and done faster than I expected!
I do! It was pretty subtle and I didn’t notice much at first but when I got to my workout the next day I noticed how much looser my upper body was. I will also say that I don’t have any pain or issues with my shoulders whatsoever so I’m sure if you are someone who has suffered from an injury or tightness you would notice more of an effect. But I will definitely go back to get this done!
I went to the Farmington Viverant that is connected to the gym I work for, Anytime Fitness. If you are in the area go here because Jon is awesome and makes the procedure seamless! He will make sure you are all set up and even give you a free movement assessment to see if there’s other areas you may need work on or tell you if there’s a better option for the issues you’re dealing with. If you just want to try it out if you’re like me and don’t have other circumstances that’s cool too! When you schedule yours just tell them Lauren sent ya in!!
If you’ve tried needling before I’d love to know your experience with it – comment on this post or send me a message over on Instagram!
